What the data says
An overview of the public data behind BSX.
Boston Scientific closed at $52.01, sitting in the lower half of a 52-week band that runs from $42.20 to $109.50. That range is unusually wide for a large-cap medical device name — the high is more than double the low — and the current price is closer to the bottom of it, roughly 9 points above the trailing low and well below the highs the stock reached over the past year. The market capitalization stands at about $71.5 billion.
At $52.01 the shares trade at roughly 21 times trailing earnings and about 14 times forward estimates, a gap that reflects expectations for earnings to grow from here rather than any change in the current price. Price to book sits near 2.9. The business itself carries a net profit margin of about 17.5% with revenue growing around 7.5% year over year, so the earnings supporting that multiple are real rather than marginal. Beta of 0.57 means the stock has historically moved a little over half as much as the broader market, which is typical of medical device companies whose demand is tied to procedure volumes rather than the economic cycle.
Recent headlines have been mostly about the sector rather than the company. Most of the last two months' items are third-party market-sizing reports on electrosurgery, robotic endoscopy, urology devices, disposable endoscopes, and brain implants — the categories Boston Scientific competes in, but not news about Boston Scientific itself. The clearest company-specific item is an August 10 report that CEO Mahoney purchased more than 200,000 shares for roughly $10 million. The remaining items concern other firms in adjacent cardiac diagnostics.
