What the data says

An overview of the public data behind SMCI.

SMCI last closed at $39.84, sitting between a 52-week low of $19.48 and a high of $58.78 — roughly a third off the top of that band and about double the bottom. A range that wide, with the high more than three times the low, describes a stock that has moved in large swings over the past year rather than drifting; the current price sits in the middle third of it.

The market is valuing the business at about $25.8 billion, or roughly 21 times trailing earnings and 3.2 times book value. The forward multiple of about 7.5 is much lower than the trailing one, meaning the earnings estimates behind that figure are far higher than what the company has reported over the past twelve months. Revenue grew about 93% year over year, but the profit margin is 5.7% — a thin slice of each dollar of sales reaches the bottom line, which is characteristic of hardware assembly rather than software. A beta near 1.97 means the stock has historically moved close to twice as much as the broad market in both directions, consistent with the width of the 52-week range.

Recent coverage is heavily company-specific and clusters around the fourth-quarter results reported in mid-August, with several pieces framed around the reported quarter and a same-day move in the shares. An earlier item references $60 billion in orders booked during the quarter. The flow is not uniformly favorable: one July piece describes an author choosing a different AI name after a 20% jump, and a law firm issued an investor notice concerning the company in early July. A minority of the coverage is sector-level rather than about Supermicro itself, covering AI inference infrastructure, data center direct-to-chip cooling, and hyperscaler capital spending — the end markets its systems are sold into.
