What the data says

An overview of the public data behind YUM.

At $157.00, the shares sit in the upper half of their 52-week range of $137.33 to $170.14 — about 10% above the low and roughly 8% below the high. That entire band spans only around a quarter of the low, which is a relatively contained year for a stock of this size, and the beta of 0.56 fits that picture: the shares have historically moved a good deal less than the broad market, so the range reflects a business the market has repriced in modest steps rather than sharp swings.

With a market capitalization near $43.3 billion, the stock trades at about 24.5 times trailing earnings and roughly 21 times forward estimates, a gap that reflects expectations of higher earnings ahead. Behind that multiple is a profit margin of about 20.5% and revenue growth of roughly 15% — the franchise-heavy model converts a fifth of revenue into profit, which is the kind of economics that typically carries a multiple above the market average. The price-to-book figure is negative, which means shareholders' equity on the balance sheet is below zero, a common outcome for franchisors that have returned capital through buybacks and debt; the ratio isn't a meaningful valuation input here. The dividend yield stands at about 1.97%.

The news flow splits between company-specific and sector-wide items. The company-level stories center on brand and portfolio changes: coverage from mid-to-late June of Yum! Brands selling Pizza Hut, plus brand-level activity such as KFC Canada launching a beverage line in late July and Pizza Hut UK reopening its Marble Arch location in early July. The remainder is industry backdrop rather than company news — a Domino's share decline to a 52-week low following a CEO change, and a piece on consumer discretionary names adding buyback capacity during a weak stretch — which places some of the recent commentary on the restaurant and consumer sector generally rather than on this company alone.

About Yum! Brands, Inc.

Yum! Brands, Inc. develops, operates, and franchises quick service restaurants in the United States and internationally. It reports through four divisions built around its brands: KFC, focused on fried chicken; Taco Bell, focused on Mexican-inspired food; Pizza Hut, focused on pizza; and Habit Burger & Grill, which serves chargrilled burgers and sandwiches. The large majority of its restaurants are run by independent franchisees rather than owned by the company, so much of its revenue comes from franchise fees and royalties alongside sales at company-operated locations. The company was formed in 1997 when PepsiCo spun off its restaurant business as TRICON Global Restaurants, Inc., and took its current name in May 2002. Its operations in mainland China were separated in 2016 into Yum China Holdings, a distinct public company that licenses the brands for that market. Yum! Brands is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky.
