What the data says

An overview of the public data behind MCHP.

At $71.58, Microchip trades roughly 32% below its 52-week high of $105.91 and about 48% above its 52-week low of $48.52 — a band in which the high is more than double the low. That is a wide path for one year, and the current price sits in the lower half of it, nearer the bottom of the range than the top. A beta of 1.74 is consistent with that span: the shares have historically moved with noticeably more amplitude than the broad market, in both directions.

The valuation figures point in two different directions depending on which earnings base is used. The trailing price-to-earnings ratio of about 109 is set against a forward multiple of roughly 16, meaning the market is pricing the $40.3 billion company against expected profits far larger than the ones most recently reported. The profitability data explains the gap: a net margin of 9.3% is slim for a chipmaker, while revenue is growing at 38%, so sales are expanding much faster than the earnings they currently produce. Price-to-book stands at 6.2, and the stock pays a dividend yielding 2.54%, which is unusual to see alongside a triple-digit trailing multiple and reflects a payout maintained through a period of compressed earnings.

Recent coverage has been more about the neighborhood than the house. Most of the headlines are third-party market-sizing forecasts for categories Microchip sells into — automotive microcontrollers, gate driver ICs, frequency synthesizers, application-specific integrated circuits, and LoRaWAN industrial IoT — rather than reports on the company's own results or operations. The remainder are comparative pieces that place Microchip among its peers, including one on its open-standard connectivity position relative to Analog Devices and Texas Instruments, and broader chip-sector items centered on Monolithic Power and Nvidia. Company-specific news flow has been light; what exists is largely sector demand commentary.
