What the data says

An overview of the public data behind ELV.

At $407.50, Elevance Health trades near the upper end of a 52-week band that runs from $274.84 to $436.24 — a roughly $161 spread, meaning the stock has covered close to 59% of its low in swing between its extremes over the past year. The current price sits about 7% below the high and well above the trough, so the recovery from the low accounts for most of that range.

The market values the business at roughly $88 billion, or about 18 times trailing earnings and close to 14 times forward estimates, a gap that reflects expectations of higher earnings ahead. Price to book stands near 2.0. Profitability is thin in percentage terms — a net margin of about 2.5% — which is characteristic of how insurance premium revenue converts to earnings, and revenue growth of roughly 1.4% has been modest. The shares carry a beta near 0.70, so they have historically moved less than the broader market, and the dividend yield is about 1.7%.

The recent news flow is mostly sector-level rather than company-specific: headlines from the past week or two concern UnitedHealth's share performance, a healthcare providers ETF, and Cigna's coverage products, placing Elevance in a group being discussed collectively. The company-specific items are older. In March, coverage noted the stock falling after CMS froze Medicare Advantage enrollment, and April brought a report on earnings and raised guidance set against cost concerns, alongside a CMS increase to Medicare payments that lifted peers. Two items from March and April concern law firms publicizing investigations into potential shareholder claims involving the company.
