What the data says

An overview of the public data behind DG.

At $128.68, Dollar General sits near the middle of a wide 52-week band that runs from $95.11 to $158.23 — roughly a third above the low and about 19% below the high. A range that spans more than 60% of its own low tells you the past year held both a deep drawdown and a strong recovery, and the current price sits between those two poles rather than at either edge.

The market values the company at about $28.4 billion, or 18.2 times trailing earnings and 16.1 times forward estimates — the gap between the two reflecting expectations of higher earnings ahead. Price to book stands at 3.21. The underlying economics are those of a high-volume, thin-margin retailer: a 3.63% profit margin on revenue growing 3.4% year over year, with a 1.83% dividend yield alongside it. The most distinctive number here is beta at 0.25, meaning the shares have historically moved only a fraction as much as the broad market in either direction — behavior consistent with its Consumer Defensive classification.

Recent coverage is more sector-wide than company-specific. Of the eight items in the past two months, only two center on Dollar General itself: one on margin gains offsetting weather and fuel cost pressures in early June, and one on sales growth later that month. The rest belong to the neighborhood rather than the company — Dollar Tree's turnaround, Five Below's post-earnings decline, and several general dividend-stock roundups featuring Realty Income. That mix means the news flow tells you more about how discount retail and income-oriented equities are being discussed than about developments unique to this business.
