What the data says
An overview of the public data behind CVX.
Chevron closed at $205.27, near the upper end of a 52-week band that runs from $146.49 to $214.71. That range is a little under 47% wide from low to high, which is a relatively contained span for an integrated oil producer, and the current price sits roughly four percent below the top of it. The stock has spent the period working from the lower end of that band back toward the high rather than swinging between the extremes.
At a trailing P/E of about 19.8 against a forward P/E near 15.5, the market is pricing in higher earnings ahead than the last twelve months delivered — the gap between the two multiples is the clearest single figure here. Price-to-book of roughly 2.1 puts the market capitalization of about $403 billion at a little over twice the accounting value of the assets. Profitability is thinner than the size implies: a net margin near 9.8% means under ten cents of every revenue dollar reaches the bottom line, which is characteristic of a capital-intensive business whose results track commodity prices. Revenue growth of 53.5% reflects that same sensitivity. The dividend yield sits at about 3.47%, and a beta of 0.49 means the shares have historically moved roughly half as much as the broader market — the stock's swings have tended to follow oil rather than equities generally.
Recent coverage is mostly sector-level rather than company-specific. Much of it concerns dividend yields across energy names, comparisons among oil majors including Shell, and broader questions about how the group would fare if oil prices fell. Two items touch Chevron directly: reporting on $8.4 billion of debt paid down, and an analysis of what Iraq's plan to more than double its oil output over six years would mean for the company. The remainder places Chevron within lists of high-yield or income-oriented holdings rather than examining the business on its own.
