What the data says
An overview of the public data behind CSX.
At $49.41, CSX sits near the upper end of a 52-week range that runs from $31.80 to $53.60 — closer to the high than the low, and the width of that band means the stock has traveled a long way over the past year rather than holding a narrow trading zone. The market values the business around $91.5 billion.
That capitalization comes with a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 28.7, easing to 21.8 on forward estimates, which means the market is paying more for current earnings than for the earnings it expects ahead. Price-to-book stands at 6.5, a reflection of how much of the value rests above the balance-sheet asset base typical of a capital-heavy rail network. Underneath that, the business converts about 22.2% of revenue into profit, with revenue growing roughly 10.1% and a dividend yield near 1.13%. A beta of 1.21 puts the shares slightly more responsive than the broader market in both directions.
News flow over the past year has been a mix of company-specific and sector-wide items. On the company side, CSX declared a quarterly dividend in May 2026 and announced an increase to it in February 2026, and coverage followed both the first-quarter earnings report in April and the fourth-quarter report in January. The wider rail story shows up too: commentary on competitive balance issues raised by the Union Pacific–Norfolk Southern merger filing, a report on a billionaire investor shifting positions among railroad rivals, and general market roundups that mentioned CSX among other names. Taken together, the sector-level items are as prominent as the company's own announcements.
