What the data says
An overview of the public data behind CAT.
Caterpillar closed at $827.90, putting it well above its 52-week low of $410.52 but roughly 23% below the $1,073.46 high set within the same window. That range is unusually wide — the top of it sits more than two and a half times the bottom — which tells you the stock has repriced dramatically over the past year rather than drifting within a settled band. A beta of 1.61 fits that picture: the shares have moved considerably more than the broad market in both directions.
At a market capitalization of roughly $381 billion, the stock trades at about 35.7 times trailing earnings and 25.6 times forward estimates, a gap that reflects expectations for higher earnings ahead. Price to book sits near 19.6, well above what the heavy machinery sector has historically carried, which says more about how the market values the earnings stream than about the assets on the balance sheet. The underlying business shows a 14.5% profit margin on revenue growing 24% year over year, and it pays a 0.79% dividend yield — a modest income component relative to the price appreciation embedded in the current quote.
The recent news flow is only partly about Caterpillar itself. Several items are index-level market reports — the Dow's 800-point and 560-point advances in early August, and late-July declines tied to a hawkish Fed and geopolitical tension — in which Caterpillar appears as one contributor among many. The company-specific coverage clusters around a single theme: the electrical power demands of AI data centers, with commentary from Elon Musk and Jensen Huang on grid capacity framing Caterpillar's generator and power-systems business as a beneficiary. That framing, rather than construction or mining end markets, has dominated the narrative attached to the stock this summer.
