## What the data says

Valero closed at $370.72, essentially at the top of its 52-week range of $153.60 to $375.11. That range is unusually wide — the high sits more than double the low — so the stock has spent the past year covering a lot of ground rather than trading in a narrow band, and the current price places it at the upper end of everything it has done over that period.

At a roughly $106.7 billion market capitalization, the shares trade at about 15.5 times trailing earnings and about 11.9 times forward estimates, so the market is pricing in higher earnings ahead than the trailing period delivered. Price to book sits near 4.3. Profitability is thin in percentage terms — a 5.4% net margin, typical of the refining model where large revenue passes through to modest bottom-line capture — though revenue grew about 51.7% over the comparison period. The dividend yield is around 1.29%, and a beta of 0.57 indicates the stock has historically moved less than the broader market, despite the wide range it has traveled.

Recent coverage is a mix of company-specific and sector-wide items. One piece notes that VLO hit a fresh high in early September, consistent with where the price sits in its range. The rest is largely about the refining and energy group as a whole — Delek US, Phillips 66 and its refining cost target, Par Pacific, and broader pieces on stocks moving with oil prices, relative price strength screens, and index-level sector rotation. Much of the news flow, in other words, concerns conditions across refining rather than developments at Valero itself.
