Consumer Price Index — the main US inflation gauge.

Also known as: Consumer Price Index, Core CPI, CPI inflation

## Definition

CPI (Consumer Price Index) tracks the average change in prices consumers pay for goods and services. It is the most-watched US inflation measure; hotter-than-expected CPI readings tend to lift rate expectations and pressure stock valuations, while cooler readings do the opposite.
